With its fixed terrace
Does this McDonald’s take up “too much space” in public space?
In Nyon, an elected environmentalist would like to reduce the footprint of the multinational in the city center. The manager of the franchisee restaurant defends himself.

In Nyon, the days of strong crowds, passers -by who cross the street of the station often come up against three bottlenecks. The terrace of Manora, that of the McDonald’s, and finally that of the brewers.
The second of these “obstacles” makes Raphaël Dunant, Green Communal Councilor. The elected official recently asked for clarification to the municipality concerning the use of public space by fast food. “The McDonald’s restaurant takes half the side space available for pedestrians,” he said.
Mobilier in place 24 hours a day
As is generally the case in other MCDOs, the furniture of the fast food chain is fixed. Too heavy and bulky to be stolen (or used as a projectile), it does not need to be stored outside the opening hours.

Along rue de la Gare, in Nyon, the McDonald’s terrace is not the only one to expand on two rows. But the other establishments put their furniture during the night and the closing days.

“The use of public space is made 24 hours a day, all year round, regrets Raphaël Dunant. This causes a situation of injustice for other restaurateurs, disproportionate advertising and junk food. The other restaurateurs do not have permanent tables purchased at low prices and must remunerate employees to mount and dismantle the tables. ”
The manager of the McDo retorts
Confronted with the text written by the environmentalist, the manager, Thibaut Laffont de Colgegesensures that “80% of its content is inaccurate”. “We cannot speak of continuous use of the terrace because we are limited by the schedules defined in the municipal regulations.” He also notes that the choice of opting for permanent or non -furniture belongs to restaurateurs.
According to the franchisee, the establishment of the fast food chain in a frequented artery in the city center is legitimate. “Like any restaurateur, we are paying the royalty linked to the occupation of the public domain each year. The price at M2 is fixed and the size of the terraces is defined by the municipal regulations. ”
This independent, active in the local section of Gastrovaud, insists on the significant involvement of McDonald’s in regional associative life. “In eight years of presence, no complaint has never been addressed to us concerning discomfort in passing; Proof that our presence is harmoniously integrated into public space. ”
“Compliant” perimeter
Monday evening, during the meeting of the municipal council, the municipal Stéphanie Schmutz, among other things, recalled the fact that “the perimeter occupied by the terrace was in accordance with the building permit issued”.
The next day, Raphaël Dunant was focusing that “the municipality unfortunately promotes private terraces to pedestrians”. “The next step is the sending of a proposal to modify the municipal regulations (Editor’s note: dating from 1967)so that restaurants pay the same price per hour to use public space. ”
