Drama in Vietnam: a tourist boat shattered, 38 dead and five missing (photos+video)

At the main funeral home in the city of Ha Long, AFP journalists saw bodies wrapped in red fabric transported on stretchers, while relatives were crying in front of a dozen coffins.

In shock

A 68 -year -old man, who asked not to be appointed, said he rushed to the scene at 3 am to find out that his relatives, a family of four, including two boys, died in the sinking.

“We were all shocked,” he said to AFP crying. “It was a very sudden accident. They just took the children to the bay for the summer holidays and it ended horribly.”

The authorities “will investigate and clarify the cause of the incident and be careful” this accident, said a statement published on the government’s website.

The Halong Bay, visited by millions of people each year, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vietnam, renowned for its blue-green waters and limestone islands decorated with tropical forests.

In 2024, 30 ships sank in the coastal province of Quang Ninh, along Halong Bay, after being affected by Typhon Yagi.
