Certainly, no one is immune to a scam at the star. After the famous false Brad Pitt who made a lot of laughs (and cry), it was Lady Gaga’s turn to find himself involved in a funny identity theft. Three years ago, the Californian artist Emma Webster received a request that she would not have thought possible.
The issuer, hidden behind the email [email protected], plans to buy her a work because she is “a big fan” of her work and she wants to “enlarge” her collection, “which is made up of influential female artists like Kusama, Frankenthaler or Louise Bourgeois”.
A known artist
Emma Webster, based in Los Angeles and already rich in a reputation that swells in the environment, is literally on the ass. This mysterious “ladyandkoji” would actually be Lady Gaga herself(Koji being the name of one of his dogs). The message is signed “Stefani,” the real first name of the Pop patron. At the beginning, the young artist was “delighted” and did not suspect a second that this request could emanate from a scammer.
The two protagonists then begin to chat in writing. Emma Webster indicates to his “prestigious” fan that he has only one work in stock, called “Happy Valley”, a “Kaleidoscopic pastoral scene measuring 2.10 meters by 3 meters”, specifies the New York Timeswho ended up questioning the artist this week.
Before sending her canvas, the Californian still draws a use verification, but without going too far either:
“I generally sell to collectors that I met in person. Could you check your identity in one way or another …? I am delighted to join your magnificent collection! ”
The artist, at the false Lady Gaga, by email.
Not demotivated for a penny, the false interpreter of Born This Way then replied with an alleged selfie, accompanied by a little word of a disarming normality:
“Here is a little photo of me doing a few small things before you hit the road!” I will be absent from this evening, but my darling assistant will watch my emails and settle the bills. ”
The selfie in question:
As strange as it may seem, this photo will finish to persuade the artist that she is about to sell one of his works to Lady Gaga. It remains to negotiate its price. The false star requires a “small discount”, which Emma Webster will grant him without blinking, we always read in the New York Times. “Happy Valley” will therefore be sent for the sum of $ 55,000, which the young woman will indeed receive on her account a few days later.
Concerned about the route of her works, like most artists, the Californian then issues a last will:
“I politely ask you not to resell the table for five years. I hope you don’t mind; The market is simply crazy at the moment. PS: your glasses are crazy, by the way! ”
Emma Webster, at the false Lady Gaga by email.
Request not only accepted by “Lady Gaga”, but duly motivated: “Absolutely, I never sell”.
Is everything that ends well? Lol.
Three years later, it is the artist’s father who will unconsciously break the fairy tale, discovering the famous canvas on the Instagram account of the Christie’s house. The legend of the publication returns the belly of Emma Webster:
“Ready for the marathon of the month of art in Hong Kong?” To start this exciting month well at Christie’s, we are delighted to unveil one of the most fascinating lots of our next post-millennial evening sale: “Happy Valley” by Emma Webster! “
The artist’s instinctive reaction:
“Why would Devil Lady Gaga sell this auction?”

We make it short. Even today, no one knows who is hiding behind this false Lady Gaga. Neither the artist, nor his lawyer and even less the various intermediaries who participated, possibly despite themselves, in the landing of “Happy Valley” in Asia.
And the manager of the pop star was formal, after Emma contacted him in disaster: “I fear that you were not due by someone to pass for her. She does not have this email address. I present to you my most sincere apologies for this scam! ”.
Matt Chung, a gallery owner from Honk Kong who put the work for sale at Christie’s, confined himself to asserting that he bought “Happy Valley” from a certain John Wolf, artistic advisor of Los Angeles, always tells us New York Times. The investigation, she went back to the FBI, which seems to take this story particularly seriously.
For her part, Emma Webster, who was one day the star of a mini-documentary produced by another Emma (Watson), can at least console himself by saying that his rating has taken muscle again, three years after having conversed with “Lady Gaga”.
