Emmanuel Macron “reiterates France’s support” to kyiv, while “reaffirming the importance of the fight against corruption”

The French president said this Sunday, July 27 that “despite the war”, Ukraine remained “a vibrant democracy” which continues “to progress on its European path”.

During a call with his Ukrainian counterpart, Emmanuel Macron “reiterated France’s support” in kyiv. “We will continue to strengthen help from Ukraine and accentuate pressure on Russia,” he said with Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We have shared the conviction that what also distinguishes Ukraine from Russia today is that it remains, despite the war, a vibrant democracy, and that it intends to continue to progress on its European path,” wrote this Sunday, July 27, Emmanuel Macron in a publication on social networks.

“In this context, we have reaffirmed the importance of the fight against corruption, carried by independent and fully effective institutions,” he added, reference to a bill revoking the independence of bodies to combat corruption in Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelensky says he “listened” to the demonstrators on the anti -corruption law

This first text, voted by Parliament on Wednesday and promulgated by Volodymyr Zelensky in the process, planned to place the Nabu and the SAP, the two main bodies to combat corruption in Ukraine, under the supervision of the Attorney General, itself subject to the President. A measure that in fact removed their independence.

This law has aroused outcry in civil society and the first large -scale street protests in kyiv since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022. It also caused strong criticism of the European Union, which Ukraine aims to integrate.

Faced with the controversy, Volodymyr Zelensky first tried to defend the text by accusing the structures concerned of ineffectiveness and to be under “Russian influence”. He finally announced Thursday to propose a new bill to ensure their “independence” in the face of power again.

The new text must now be voted by Parliament and will be examined next Thursday by the deputies. He was praised by the Nabu, the organization responsible for investigating corruption.
