Employers offer an extra long weekend for Canada’s Day

Toronto – Whoever works from Monday to Friday and wants to enjoy a long weekend for Canada’s Day had to reshuffle his agenda to compose with this holiday that falls in the middle of the week.

This year, July 1 is a Tuesday, which requires a lot of working on a quirky Monday, wedged between two days off, unless you use a vacation day to overcome this capricious schedule.

Some young shoots claim that they abandon on Monday and give their employees a paid day of leave in order to flatten the difficulties that the public holidays.

It may not make sense on paper, recognized Moody Abdul, founder of Klarify, but it is important to give priority to the happiness of employees.

“It is a mentality of” If I take care of yourself, you will take care of us, “said Abdul.

Binding the public holiday of Canada’s Day at the previous weekend is only a way of testifying to recognition to employees, he said.

For Quebecers, this is the second Tuesday, a consecutive holiday since the national holiday was celebrated on June 24.

With the Canada Day that follows so close, it is not uncommon for Quebecers to take all the week off between the two holidays, a bit like many live the period between Christmas and the New Year.

Of course, not all employers cannot offer such accommodation, and full -time workers with less room for maneuver must choose between taking a day off or satisfying a quirky schedule.

Ani Siddique, research assistant at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto, said he asked for her leave for a long time in advance to get ahead of her colleagues who had the same idea.

“I had to ask, but I planned things one or two months in advance,” he said. Morad Affifi, sitting in a downtown park after his work quarter on Friday, explained that most of the festivities planned for Canada’s party take place during the weekend, but that he decided to draw on his vacation days to avoid working on Monday.

Suze Mason, co -founder of the digital health platform Sprout Family, said that her five employees have leave on Monday and that she does not expect this decision to have a significant operational impact on her business.

Sprout Family ensures the coordination of fertility care through business benefits programs. Mson Mason added that many of her customers, including large Canadian organizations, plan to consider Monday as a holiday.

“We have found wise to offer our employees a day of rest and resources, while limiting the direct impact on the company,” she explained.

Ms. Mason added that extending the leave period so that it corresponds to that of the companies with which Sprout Family works can also allow employees to disconnect more easily, knowing that they are not essential.

“Sometimes being on vacation while the company runs at full speed without you can be stressful.”

Vineet Johnson, founder and CEO of IREGAINED, explains that he got into the habit of filling the annoying gaps between days off when they occur.

Johnson, whose company develops neuroréAdaptation devices, said that he did the same last December when the day after Christmas fell on a Thursday, which would have otherwise forced people to return to work for a single day before the weekend.

“It’s a simple and obvious measure,” he said.
