“Excessively hot temperatures” for the first part of summer in Belgium: what should we expect for the future?

“We finished the month of July with an average temperature of 19.4 ° C, or 0.7 ° C above normal which is 18.7 ° C”explains Pascal Mormal, meteorologist at MRI. On the precipitation side, these are aligned with seasonal expectations, with 80.6mm raised for a normal of 76.9mm. “On the sunshine side, we were also a little surplus with 10:53 p.m. for an average of 8:14 p.m., about twenty hours more than the average”continues the meteorologist.

A meteorological summer under the sign of heat

The meteorological summer in Belgium, which extends from June 1 to August 31, is already exceptional. Over the first two months (June and July), the average temperature amounts to 19.4 ° C against a normal of 17.7 ° C, displaying a temperature surplus of 1.7 ° C.

“These are excessively hot temperatures. It is obviously linked in June which was very very hot, it is even the second hotest month of June in Uccle”explains Pascal Mortmal.

Regarding sunshine, there too the meteorological summer is well above average. “We recorded 473h27 of sun from June 1 to July 31, which is much more than the seasonal normal which is 405:31. Despite a small precipitation deficit with 112.2mm instead of the usual 147.7mm (editor’s note : these are the figures measured in Uccle), the summer rains, often stormy and intense, have made it possible to avoid a drought of a serious surface, even if the summer rains are not those which recharge the water table. “

When will the return of the sun and the heat in Belgium? “We will observe an anomaly in August”

A month of August announced very sunny: around a meteorological summer in the top 5 of the hottest in history

The first weeks of August should prolong this trend, with dry, sunny weather and temperatures generally oscillating between 25 and 30 ° C. “”A heat wave seems unlikely, but there are still temperatures regularly superior to the seasonal averages. The models already suggest that, except reversal of the situation at the end of the month, the summer of 2025 will probably join the top 5 of the hottest summers ever recorded in Belgium “predicts the MRI meteorologist.

Despite some episodes of rain, the general impression of a gloomy summer is not reflected in the statistics: July was hot, sunny and normally watered, an extension of an exceptional month of June. The summer of 2025 will undoubtedly remain marked by the heat, even if we will not reach the absolute records of heat wave.

Belgium is therefore preparing to live two summer, hot and sunny summer weeks, without scorching excess to be expected for the moment, but with temperatures much above seasonal normal.
