Failed attack in Kleine-Brogel: Belgium plans to transfer from Nizar Trabelsi to Tunisia after its extradition

The fate of Nizar Trabelsi remains uncertain. It has no right of residence valid in Belgium, and the communication of the SPF Foreign Affairs suggests that the country plans to expel it towards Tunisia. However, the extradition treaty concluded between the United States and Belgium explicitly prohibited its transfer to this country.

Nizar Trabelsi was sentenced in 2004 in Belgium to ten years in prison for planning a suicide attack on the Kleine-Brogel air base. In November 2008, the American authorities asked for its extradition, on the grounds that American nationals were present on the basis.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) had forbidden Belgium to proceed with extradition. The Belgian government had not waited for the depletion of the remedies, and the extradition had been executed in 2013. After ten years of detention in the United States, Nizar Trabelsi was finally acquitted by an American federal jury.

Last January, the Brussels Court of Appeal sentenced the Belgian state to on -call ones, believing that it did not do what is necessary to organize the return of Nizar Trabelsi in Belgium.
