GreeceFerrys from Athens canceled due to strong winds
Gusts at 88 km/h prevent navigation, especially towards the Cyclades, at the height of the tourist season.
Only ferrys serving nearby islands can navigate.
AFPViolent winds blow this Friday in Greece this Friday, disturbing the trips of tens of thousands of tourists, including many foreigners, whose ferries had to stay at the port in Athens, and increasing the risk of fire.
After an emergency meeting, the Ministry of Civil Protection said that the gusts of wind would reach 88 km/h, especially in the south of the Aegean Sea, which includes the Crete Sea. All ferry links from Athens ports were canceled, with the exception of those serving the nearby islands, in the Saronic Gulf, such as Hydra, Egine, Poros and Spets, the Coast Guard announced.
Thus, ferry links serving the cyclades, including the very touristy islands of Mykonos and Paros, as well as Crete have been canceled, preventing the movements of tens of thousands of tourists, at the peak of the season.
High risk of fire
The National Observatory of Athens also warned in a press release that there was a “very high risk of forest fires due to the wind”, in particular in the east and the south of the country.
The mayor of Athens also closed the national garden on Thursday after a tree fell into one of the busiest shopping arteries in the capital, shortly lacking passers -by.
