A fire broke out on Sunday afternoon in a waste recovery company in Mont-sur-Lausanne (VD). The disaster, which was still underway at the start of the evening, caused a strong release of smoke.

(Keystone-ATS) It is a deposit of metallic waste in the open air which caught fire, said Pascal Granado, spokesperson for the Vaud police, contacted by Keystone-ATS. He evokes a pile of scrap nearly ten meters high.

The flames were fueled by the wind and the fire was not yet completely extinguished Sunday around 6:00 p.m.

No one was injured by the fire, which however caused significant smoke. Residents of the region have been asked to close their windows and stop ventilation or air conditioning. Traffic was also strongly disrupted in the region.

The population alert, announced at 1:30 p.m. by Alertswiss, was lifted around 6.30 p.m.

Already Friday

Between 50 and 70 firefighters intervened and had to take turns overnight to completely circumscribe the fire, said the spokesperson. He added that experts were also on site to assess possible pollution, especially in surrounding rivers.

At the end of the day Friday, another important fire had affected a warehouse sheltering waste and recycling machines in Lucens (VD). If the two affected companies have the same name, they are separate entities, depending on 24 hours and 20 minutes.
