It is the fourth victim of the fires that have ravaged the country since July, particularly affecting the north and the center.
A firefighter was killed in Portugal after being seriously injured by fighting a forest fire, the Portuguese presidency announced on Saturday.
She expressed her condolences to the family, adding that man “Tragically lost her life after having directly fought forest fires in the commune of Sabugal”.
The 45 -year -old man, operator of AFOCELCA, was seriously burned on Tuesday during a fire and transferred to the hospital of São João, in Porto. He suffered from 75 % burns of his body and other medical complications.
According to a hospital source, he died on Saturday in the early hours, said the Portuguese media Morning Mail.
Other hospitalized victims
Three other people injured in fires are hospitalized in Coimbra: a victim of a fire truck accident, stabilized after surgery, a nurse suffering from serious burns, whose vital prognosis remains reserved and a voluntary firefighter hospitalized for serious burns is stable.
Since July, Continental Portugal has been affected by many major rural fires, particularly in the North and the Center. The fires left four dead and several injured, completely or partially destroying residences, farms and forest areas.
Reinforcements and provisional assessment
Portugal has activated the European civil protection mechanism, mobilizing two Fire Boss planes, a Super Puma helicopter and two additional Canadair planes expected on Saturday.
According to provisional data, around 234,000 hectares were ravaged by flames, including more than 53,000 during the Arganil fire alone.
