Google will kill millions of links in a month

After closing the GOO.GL service, which made it possible to shorten the size of the links on the web, Google will soon deactivate the still active directions. In a month, no more Goog.GL link will work.

The count is launched. In Pile a month, the Google service shortening the length of a web address will die for good. Indeed, it is from August 25, 2025 that the links in format “https://goo.gl/*” (the asterisk being replaced by a single alphanumeric code for each URL) will become completely inert.

Today, an URL like “https://goo.gl/d4g84y” still works and redirects to the article in Numerama dedicated to the role of data protection delegate. We understand its interest well: the initial URL has 136 characters, while its shortened version is only 22. It is a division by six, which was practical when the size of the messages imported – for example, on the old Twitter.

Links fallen into oblivion

But if the links are still operational, it will not last. Besides, if you click on a goo.gl URL, you will come across a warning manual: ” This link will no longer work in the near future. GOO.GL links will no longer work after August 25, 2025. An explanation page is also made available.

In fact, it is potentially millions of links across the web that will suddenly stop working. However, as The Verge recalled, many of these shortened addresses have already fallen into oblivion and are practically no longer used. According to statistics from June 2024, “more than 99 %” of these links had no activity.

The end of these directions should therefore not change the face of the web, according to Google. The generation of GOO.GL links was arrested at the end of March 2019, more than six years ago. Consequently, no new shortened link goo.gl has not been born since that date. The previous ones had a lot of time to be buried.

For those who have used GOO.GL, especially on websites, the best practice would undoubtedly be to update links, in order to replace shortened URL with normal URLs. But perhaps the effort to be provided is excessive given the expected gains. Too bad for the rotting of the web.
