- Swiss Life’s study reveals that 80% of Swiss retirees appreciate their daily lives.
- Elderly people with modest incomes travel less and report more fragile health.
- Retired men rely much more on their partner than women.
The start of retirement is often perceived as the end of a rhythmic daily life. But according to A Swiss Life studythe majority of Swiss retirees approach this new phase of their lives with enthusiasm and dynamism, in reverse of certain shots.
In his study “How do we live after retirement”, Swiss Life became interested in the quality of life of seniors. Last January, an online survey was carried out with 2063 people aged 65 to 80. All respondents live in a private household and not in an EMS.
Result: 8 out of 10 retirees interviewed positively judge their daily life with regard to leisure, health, mobility and social contacts. Please note, a variable has a lot: income level. “Low -income people not only have a shorter life expectancy, but believe for example to be less healthy and, for financial reasons, give up travel more,” explain the authors of the study in their introduction.
On solitude
The subject is a little delicate: once the retirement age has reached, do the Swiss take regret with them? How do they look at their past working life? According to the investigation, this look is largely serene: two thirds of the respondents say they have little or no regrets.
In addition, if 23% note a drop in their social contacts since their retirement, 34% believe on the contrary that these links have become richer. However, almost a third of the 65 to 74 years said to feel “at least occasionally” a feeling of loneliness.
The couple, central for men
The life of a couple occupies a central place in the new balance of the daily life of retirees, but … men and women are not equal. If the majority (61%) of respondents quote their partner as a trusted person, the disparity depending on the genre is radical: the figure increases to 80% in men, against 45% in women.
Young retirees are the most active
The survey reveals that young retirees are very active: nearly three -quarters of them regularly practice walking or hiking. An equivalent proportion takes care with intellectual exercises such as crosswords.
Health remains a concern, but it is not an obstacle to activity. Half of the 65 to 74 years suffer from a chronic health problem, but only 20% feel limited in their daily lives.
Trip, travel
Travel occupies an important place in the life of Swiss retirees: two thirds have visited Switzerland or Europe in the past twelve months. Here again, the financial means directly influence the possibility of traveling, but also of coming out satisfied.
