In Friborg, a police hotel shows the path of green architecture
The Mad3 administrative building of the cantonal police has just won a national certification of sustainability. An example that could inspire the whole canton.
The Mad3 Building of the Cantonal Police in Granges-Paccot has just obtained the standard Swiss sustainable construction certification (SNBS) for existing building, thus appearing among one of the first buildings existing in Switzerland to receive this distinction, according to a press release published Wednesday by the Directorate of Territorial Development, Infrastructure, Mobility and the Environment (DIM).
This certification, awarded Wednesday to the building service (SBAT), is part of a national pilot project led by the Swiss sustainable construction network (NNBS).
The administrative building, commissioned in 2017, houses cantonal police services and responds to high standards in terms of energy, architecture and functionality. The SNBS evaluates not only the ecological aspects of buildings, but also their economic and societal dimensions throughout their life cycle.
A pilot project for existing buildings
The SBAT proposed Mad3 as a study case as part of a national pilot project aimed at adapting the SNBS standard to the already built buildings. Just over 100 projects are currently participating in this pilot phase across Switzerland, and the majority should obtain certification. For the past two years, the SBAT systematically has applied this standard for the construction and renovation of its buildings, in accordance with the state development strategy.
To carry out this approach, the building service worked with the CSD engineering office, the architectural office Deillon Delley, responsible for the architectural project, as well as with the cantonal police who occupies the premises. This collaboration made it possible to carry out a complete evaluation of the building in operation.
This certification confirms the canton’s commitment to sustainable management of its real estate stock and helps achieve its climatic objectives. It shows that the principles of sustainability can be effectively applied to existing buildings, thus opening the way to other similar certifications in the canton.
