But Donald Trump does not forget the national scene either, where he found his new target: Zohran Mamdani, the surprise winner of the New York Democratic primary, a “Sigrated communist” in his eyes.
The 33-year-old man born in Uganda, future Democratic candidate to become the mayor of the largest city in the United States, claims “Progressive and Muslim”. He was elected on an assumed left program and a cheaper promise of life, ranging from free buses and crèches to the freezing of regulated rents, all funded by taxation on the highest income. He also positioned himself on a resolutely pro-Palestinian and critical line of the Israeli government, a position that divides radically even within the Democratic Party.
It didn’t take more for Donald Trump, who regularly attacks major American cities led by “Far left democrats”. “It finally happened, the Democrats went too far. Zohran Mamdani embodies a new hope for the left wing of the Democratic Party, and was strongly supported and congratulated by the main tenors of this current, from Bernie Sanders to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. If he has not yet officially won the Democratic primary in New York against the centrist Andrew Cuomo, the complex electoral system and the withdrawal of the candidate who arrived third almost undoubtedly victory.
An election that remains uncertain
The election, which will take place on November 4, could however be more uncertain than usual. Despite his defeat, Andrew Cuomo, who had resigned from his mandate as a governor of New York State in 2021 for sexual harassment scandals, does not at all exclude an independent candidacy for the town hall. The outgoing councilor, Eric Adams, also initially a democrat, will be indeed a candidate without a label. He was strongly died in his camp, because they are accused of compromising himself with the Trump administration in exchange for the burial for corruption.
The winner of the Democratic primary this fall will then face the republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa, a conservative activist who had made himself known in the 1970s by creating the “Guardian Angels”, a sort of non-armed militia which patrolled in the New York metro to help the police to ensure security.
