The neighboring countries of Armenia and Azerbaijan as well as international institutions reacted with enthusiasm to the new peace agreement signed on Friday between Baku and Yerevan under the aegis of the United States.
However, this agreement, which aims to end decades of conflict, provides for a corridor in the Caucasus that Iran said they wanted to block. The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concerns about the potential negative consequences of any foreign intervention near its borders.
Russia, the Georgian opposition and Georgian Prime Minister Iraqli Kobakhidze all greeted the agreement, the latter describing it as the start of a new era of stability and economic development.
The EU and the United Nations also praised the agreement as being beneficial for the establishment of lasting peace.
The High EU representative for Foreign Affairs has published a link to the social media to the statement official.
She briefly sums up the recent path to this historic agreement:
“After the finalization of bilateral negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the text of the peace agreement last March, it is an important and decisive step towards a complete normalization of the relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, based on the mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders, in accordance with the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1991”.
The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev, signed this agreement on Friday agreement in the presence of US President Donald Trump in Washington, after almost four decades of a bloody conflict, focused on the contested region of Karabakh. In September 2023, Azerbaijan regained total control of the region after a successful military campaign.
