The former CEO of SNC-Lavalin Jacques Lamarre was found guilty of 7 of the 14 counts he faced with the disciplinary council of the Order of Engineers of Quebec (OIQ) following a corruption scandal in which he and the company were involved. In the wake of the judgment, and because of the process which he describes as “deeply inequitable”, he announced on Wednesday that he resigned from order.
In the decision of nearly 300 pages rendered on 1is August, but not yet available publicly, the OIQ criticizes in particular that which was P.-DG of SNC-Lavalin (now atkinsrenis since) from 1996 to 2009 for having “tolerated a system of corruption and collusion”, to have paid “sums to obtain contracts” and to have recourse to “dishonest and doubtful processes”.
This judgment only covers the guilt of Mr. Lamarre: the decision on the sanction to be applied will be rendered later, on a date which remains to be determined.
Announcing his departure from the OIQ by press release, Jacques Lamarre says he is “particularly disappointed with the way in which the disciplinary investigation was carried out”. “Faced with the conflict that persists with the order, and the way I have been treated, I have no choice but to put my resignation,” he said.
“The trustee of the Order gave complete immunity to certain witnesses in conflict of interests, while seeking to attribute the responsibility of gestures to me of which these same witnesses were found guilty before other bodies,” adds the ex-P.-DG
The press release also specifies that Mr. Lamarre remains “convinced that he had acted in all integrity”.
