HealthElon Musk’s drug is emulated in Luxembourg
Ketamine, powerful anesthetic which treats depression, has its defenders in Luxembourg, both in the medical and political environment.
Originally, an anesthetic used for horses and a reputation that is no longer to be done since the information began to circulate on its most famous follower, Elon Musk. It is ketamine that would give the South African billionaire this martian appearance in boiling. Not the best promotion for a potentially devastating substance when it is poorly ingested, but whose medical use offers undeniable therapeutic virtues.
In Luxembourg, the Spravato medication, based on esketamine (a derivative of ketamine) has a marketing authorization. Four drugs with active ingredient in ketamine or esketamine are used in hospital in the treatment of depression, the Ministry of Health said.
Convincing results
“For my part, I have been using it for fifteen years. At the start, there was a little mistrust, then the craze. Most avant-garde psychiatrists are convinced of its potential, and Luxembourg is not closed on the issue, ”analyzes Dr. Fabrice Godenir, psychiatrist at Chem. The doctor claims 70% improvement with even long -term work in patients seriously affected by depression.
Psychedelic or dissociative drugs, ketamine makes it possible to extract, in a way, from reality to discover new aspirations. It is used “on the front line” in the event of “risk of imminent suicide” and “on the second line” if the antidepressants do not work, explains Dr. Godenir.
“This can be liberating for some patients”
Medical enthusiasm, but also political in Luxembourg, where the European ecological deputy, Tilly Metz, turned into the profits of Kétamine on the medical level. With other MEPs, it tries to promote its use on the EU scale: “This can be liberating for certain patients. There are many possibilities with why not the improvement of the mental state of people affected by cancer, ”imagines the elected Essentialwhile insisting on the necessary supervision.
Ketamine to party
Because psychedelic effects also arouse the temptation of festive consumers. According to data provided by the Ministry of Health, its consumption experienced a slight increase between 2014 and 2023, before stabilization. A little more than 2% of resident adults who have already consumed drugs say they have taken it in the last 30 days. A figure more than twice lower than the levels listed in the rest of the EU. Thus, ketamine would be “one of the least consumed substances consumed by recreational drug users in Luxembourg”, relativizes the Ministry of Health.
