Lightning would have struck a building with 16 dwellings in Sorel-Tracy

By: Jean-Philippe Morin

Dozens of people will find themselves homeless for several days while their housing building, located on Place Monseigneur-Anneau in Sorel-Tracy, was allegedly the victim of lightning shortly afternoon on Thursday, July 3.

At least, this is the main hypothesis raised on the spot, but the survey remains to be completed, according to the director of the Sorel-Tracy emergency protection and emergency intervention, Roger Lamanca.

“As soon as we arrived, the fire was caught in the space of the building of 16 dwellings. Damage is mainly in two dwellings, one of which was damaged more seriously. We quickly rang a general alarm and there were around thirty firefighters on the spot, “he says.

Indeed, a tanker truck and five countercotae firefighters were in reinforcement on the scene of the fire, while firefighters from Saint-Roch-de-Richelieu assumed the coverage of the barracks.

No one was injured and all the tenants were able to evacuate in time. The fire was declared controlled around 1:50 p.m. “We made a bus available to them. They will be taken care of by the Red Cross since the residents will not be able to return to their accommodation for a few days, ”explains Mr. Lamanque.
