The United Kingdom undertakes to achieve the objective set as part of NATO to devote 5% EDE its gross domestic product to security expenditureThe Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday on Monday on the eve of an alliance summit.
Faced with the Russian threat, and under pressure from US President Donald Trump, NATO countries are preparing to announce an agreement on this target on Tuesday and Wednesday by 2035.
“We must navigate an era of extreme uncertainty with agility, speed and a clear vision of the national interest, to guarantee the security” of the population, “said the British leader in a statement.
Hundreds of billions of francs
“This is why I made the commitment to spend 5% of GDP for national security. It is an opportunity to deepen our commitment to NATO and more broadly stimulate investment in the security and resilience of the nation, “he added.
The increase in defense expenses which must be announced by the Allies provides for a commitment to devote at least 3.5% of their GDP to military spending stricto sensu, and 1.5% to security expenditure in the broad sense, such as military mobility or cybersecurity. This increase, which amounts to hundreds of billions of francs, was required by Donald Trump, failing which he threatened to no longer defend the “bad payers”.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that this “leap forward” in security spending was “fundamental” to ensure the future of the allies, especially in the face of the threat of Russia. In February, the British government had promised to bring its defense budget to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, then to 3% after 2029.
