Macron recognizes Palestine, the PS calls on Belgium to follow: “We will position ourselves on the question in early September”, announces the Cabinet Prévot

The announcement of the French president Emmanuel Macron concerning the recognition of Palestine causes many reactions. In Belgium, we will know in a few weeks.

This Thursday evening, Emmanuel Macron announced on social networks that France will recognize the state of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September in New York.

“True to its historical commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I decided that France will recognize the state of Palestine. I will make the solemn announcement to the United Nations General Assembly, next September, “wrote the French head of state.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas praised Friday as “a victory for the Palestinian cause”, the announcement of French president Emmanuel Macron. “This reflects France’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights to their land and their homeland,” said Abbas, according to a press release from the Palestinian Authority.

An announcement that has caused many reactions, positive for some, but less for others, in the leader of the United States and Israel for example.

The German government “does not plan to recognize a short-term Palestinian state,” he said on Friday. Berlin “continues to consider the recognition of a Palestinian state as one of the last stages towards the two -state solution”, specified in a statement the German government, recalling that the security of Israel “is of primordial importance” for Germany.

But what about the position of Belgium? What is certain is that the situation in Gaza puts the coalition under pressure, in particular following the position of Sammy Mahdi, the president of the CD & V.

According to the cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prévot (the committed), “the government will position itself on the question of the recognition of the State of Palestine in early September”. Contacted by our colleagues from VRT News, Maxime Prévot did not wish to speak on the announcement of Emmanuel Macron.

Coalition partners have been asking for this recognition for months, such as Vooruit. This morning, it was Paul Magnette, the president of the PS, who positioned himself in this direction on social networks.

The Open VLD is on the same wavelength. “France and Emmanuel Macron will recognize Palestine in September as a state. Belgium must join them: more than 60,000 victims, a hungry population, no perspective of peace. Recognition must be part of a process towards legitimate and democratic autonomy. The time has come from a European coalition for peace, “said deputy Kjell Van der Elst on X.

“It’s a turning point,” said Ecolo Samuel Cogolati co-president. “But that is not enough. It is not a recognition that feeds babies in Gaza or that stops ethnic cleaning in the West Bank. Sanctions are needed. You have to protect. You have to act. What about Belgium? How many deaths will it still take for our government to take responsibility? Even Emmanuel Macron moves. The N-VA had dropped a government for a symbolic UN text. Will the committed people remain in a government that matures in an accomplice silence in the face of an in progress genocide? No more blabla, you need actions! »»

“We support the recognition of Palestine. For us the priority is to put an end to the genocide and it can be done by putting pressure on Israel with economic sanctions and an embargo, “underlined the group PTB chef in the Chamber, Sofie Merckx.
