Tuesday afternoon turned to Chaos in central Mahébourg. A spectacular accident occurred along the main road, a few meters from the traders stalls installed on the sidewalk. Two cars collided, one of them finishing its race under the veranda where a 67 -year -old vegetable seller was installed.
Everything went very quickly. According to police, a car from Ville-Noire in the direction of Beau-Vallon has undertaken a risky surpassing near the crossing with the rue de l’Hôpital. The driver would then have lost control of his vehicle, hitting another car coming in the opposite direction.
Under the violence of the impact, the second vehicle died towards the side of the road. His trajectory led him to the sales area of the merchant, installed in front of a commercial building. The shock projected the seller out of his chair and he was injured.
Passers -by immediately rushed and volunteers rescue him. The accident caused a significant slowdown in traffic. Mahébourg police went there. The merchant was transported to Mahébourg hospital, before being transferred to Jawaharlal Nehru hospital for further examinations. Despite the medical recommendations, he chose to leave the establishment. His injuries, although serious, would not put his days in danger, but the incident deeply marked him.
The police found that the car which ended its race against the trader’s stall was no longer there. Its driver fled right after the impact. It was not until later that a man presented himself to the police station, saying that he was driving the car during the accident. He explained that he had left the scene for fear of being taken to task by the crowd.
The driver’s alcohol test is negative. The two vehicles involved, damaged during the collision, were seized for the needs of the survey.
The investigation continues to determine the exact responsibilities and circumstances of this collision.
