After three months of intervention, Doctors Sans Frontières (MSF) officially ended his emergency action against the cholera epidemic in the villages of Shasha and Kirotshe in Masisi territory, North Kivu province, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The news was announced by the humanitarian organization this Thursday on its X account.
The intervention, which took place mainly at the Shasha Health Center and at the Kirotshe General Reference Hospital, made it possible to take care of 167 patients in a cholera processing unit as well as in a processing center, both with a capacity of 20 beds. This targeted operation was part of a context of resurgence of cholera in several health areas in the masisi territory, strongly affected by armed conflicts, population travel, and lack of access to drinking water.
“Despite the end of this emergency intervention, our teams remain mobilized in Masisi,” said MSF, stressing his commitment to pursuing primary health care, support for epidemiological surveillance and vaccination activities in coordination with local health authorities.
The intervention of MSF in the city of Shasha and Kirotshe was launched in early April, following an increase in cholera cases in this area with high population density, affected by displacements linked to armed conflict. MSF calls on the authorities to strengthen access to clean water and latrines, and to continue awareness to avoid a return of the disease.
