Measles: records broken in Canada

In its most recent report, the Ontario Public Health Department arrives at a total of 2083 cases officially identified between October 18, 2024, the date of the start of the current hatching, and June 10.

Non -vacinated people are in disproportionate number there, we read in the report: in addition to 75% of the cases identified are children or adolescents, “almost all children, infants and adolescents” infected (96%) were non -vacinated, and 68% of adults.

Before 1982, when the Alberta had started to systematically offer the measles-rubbed vaccine-Eraillons to children, the number of annual cases had exceeded 4000 on three times in the 1970s, and six times in the 1960s.

As for Ontario, for the first time since the start of hatching, an emerging baby died because of measles in early June. Her mother had been infected while she was pregnant. A child under the age of five had died in May 2024 from measles: it was the first death since 1989, the Ministry of Health then reported.

As of February, when Ontario had “only” 140 cases, it had exceeded the total of cases (101) identified throughout the previous decade (2013-2023).

Underestimated figures

And in the same way as in Texas, doctors warn, in Ontario and Alberta, that all these figures are underestimated: a very large number of parents are probably not going to the hospital as long as their child’s symptoms are mild, with the result that the virus continues to spread in families or undervacinated communities. American medical magazine STAT Written in March that Texas doctors noted that patients infected with measles had arrived at the extremely sick hospital, which suggests that some resisted the idea of being treated, until the disease has become very serious.

Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases known: a single infected person can in theory infected 18, against 2 for flu. In a number of cases, measles can cause respiratory complications such as pneumonia, or neurological complications such as encephalitis. And the World Health Organization assesses the risk of death between 1 and 3 per 1000 cases.
