The MTG-S1 European satellite, launched a few days ago, will bring much more precise data to Meteolux in order to better anticipate extreme meteorological phenomena. Explanations.
The 1is Last July marked a major advance for European meteorology, with the successful launch of the MTG-S1 satellite (Meteosat Third Generation-Stern 1).
Put in orbit by a Falcon 9 rocket in SpaceX from the Kennedy space center in NASA, this latest generation satellite promises to revolutionize meteorological and climatic surveillance on the continent, and in particular in Luxembourg.
Temperature, humidity …
Indeed, Meteolux, which officially represents the Grand Duchy within the European Organization Eumetsat, is one of the direct beneficiaries of the unpublished capacities offered by this new space tool!
Thanks to MTG-S1, the Luxembourg body will thus have three-resolution three-dimensional atmospheric data, especially on temperature, humidity and chemical composition of air.
This information will be essential to strengthen the forecast of severe weather phenomena such as violent thunderstorms, heat waves or pollution episodes.

The contribution of MTG-S1 will result in concretely by earlier and more reliable vigilances, improving Meteolux’s ability to anticipate and alert in the event of danger.
A major asset to protect the country’s population and infrastructure more effectively, very often subject, in recent years, to weather vagaries (and in particular the floods, very frequent in Luxembourg!)
Equipped with the very first first European geostational hyperspectral sounder, MTG-S1 will allow meteorologists to detect very upstream signs of instability in the atmosphere, even before the formation of storm clouds.
Almost real data
He also embeds Sentinel-4, an instrument dedicated to air quality monitoring in Europe, providing almost real data, useful for public health, agriculture or climate research.
For Meteolux, this technological advance represents a unique opportunity to improve its services and its responsiveness, at a time when extreme weather events are multiplying in a context of major climate change.
