Northvolt: an American battery manufacturer interested in buying the factory in Quebec

The American manufacturer of batteries Lyten, who announced on Thursday the acquisition of all Northvolt’s activities in Sweden and Germany, also says it is interested in buying the factory of the Swedish company in Quebec.

The purchase of Northvolt, which went bankrupt, includes the main factory of the company in northern Sweden in Skellefteå, Northvolt Ett, as well as its research and development center in Västerås (center), said Lyten in a press release.

The group will also acquire Northvolt Drei, a factory under construction, located in Germany, as well as the entire remaining intellectual property.

Lyten also expressed his interest in the acquisition of the Northvolt Six production plant, located in Quebec.

The Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy, Christine Fréchette, has confirmed that the sale of Northvolt does not include, “for the moment” the activities of the company in Quebec.

She declared, in a publication on network X, that the Quebec government was going to meet the buyer and listen to a possible proposal.

“Our government has levers to supervise, or refuse, the acquisition of the Quebec part of Northvolt,” she wrote.

Founded in 2016, Northvolt was one of the largest European manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, but he filed for bankruptcy in March due to a slowdown in demand, production delays and enormous debt.

“These newly acquired assets have been developed thanks to more than $ 5 billion in investments, including an operational production capacity of batteries of 16 GWh and more than 15 GWh under construction,” said Lyten, who builds light cells of lithium-soufre batteries.

The American company assured that it was planning to re -enlute “a significant part of the previously licensed employees” and that it “will assess the site needs by site”.

“Lyten’s objective is to become the main provider of batteries and clean energy storage systems locally, in North America and Europe,” said the owner of the Dan Cook company, quoted in the press release.

“The acquisition of Northvolt’s assets accelerates this mission for several years”.

Lyten had previously already acquired several Northvolt assets.

In November 2024, the company bought the CUBERG battery manufacturing plant in Northvolt in California.

At the beginning of July, it took control of the Polish activities of the Swedish group by acquiring the largest factory in Europe of energy storage systems by battery (BESS), intended to store solar and wind energy, in Gdansk.

Founded in 2015, Lyten specializes in lithium-soufre technology, not requiring nickel, manganese, cobalt or graphite, which are not extracted or treated in large quantities in Europe or the United States.
