Internet would be preparing to go to “The era of age verification”. This prediction was brought together in June by the Audiovisual and Digital Communication Regulatory Authority (Arcom), the French media gendarme, in its contribution to the European guidelines on the protection of minors. And it is clear that fronts have multiplied in the world for the pornographic industry, on the front line for several years.
The United Kingdom created surprise last month, announcing that as from July 25, several porn giants were going to deploy, in British territory, age verification tools, thus retreating the customary button “I am over 18”, purely declarative. Among them, there are several sites – Pornhub, Redtube, Youporn, Tube8 and Mydirtyhobby – of the Canadian and Cypriot group Aylo, leader of the industry. The list also includes “Camshows” players, such as the ICF group (Streamate, LiveHdcams), CAM4 or the giant Cypriot stripchat.
And sites specializing in adult videos are not the only ones to enter the rank, in accordance with the provisions provided by online Safety Act, voted in 2023. In recent weeks, a host of publishers have announced to deploy age verification tools in the United Kingdom, starting with Reddit, the American social network, which will hide its pornographic content behind a filter to hold the minors the gap. The same goes for the Gay Grindr meeting application, and even the Bluesky social network.
