“Our trash cans overflow, the maggots swarm”: anger rises in the face of the collection of waste reduced to Grâce-Hollogne

A question of cost caused by the multiplication of sorting sectors and the decrease in subsidies. But this change obviously does not work in the commune of Grâce-Hollogne according to some.

From January 2025, Intradel will only collect the trash cans once every two weeks in 41 municipalities in the Liège region

“The bags ferment, explode, give off foul smells”

“The worst that we feared has arrived. And it is not an exaggeration: our garbage cans overflow, the maggots swarm, the lids no longer open without making half of the neighborhood flee. All because we have decided, without consulting or adapting the conditions, that the collection of waste would now be done every 15 days. For the same bill, of course”is indignant at a resident in an open letter at the college of the town and in Intradel.

“In the heat wave, with temperatures that exceed 30 degrees, the bags ferment, explode, give off foul smells, and the health risk is real. Families, children, the elderly live in an irrespirable atmosphere”adds the local resident.

Thus, the Grachalognoise Grachals requests that the collection be restored each week during the heat period or that concrete solutions are set up immediately (adapted bins, punctual collection, drop in royalty, etc.).

A message that is not new since the college is already informed of this problem and also wishes to return to the collection of waste each week.

“We are working with Intradel. We take steps with one of the companies that take care of the collection to see how we will be able to do without breaking all public procurement. We cannot imagine a change before 2026. But we have the hope of finding a solution with Intradel. We will do everything to iron as quickly as possible to a collection system every week”explained Sébastien Blavier, alderman in charge of waste management in Grâce-Hollogne.

It remains to be seen whether this open letter will be able to unlock the situation faster … or not.

“It was not we who wanted to pass the collection of waste at two weeks”
