Rail traffic resumed on Wednesday evening at Brussels-North Station after about two hours of interruption, said Frédéric Sacré, spokesperson for Infrabel. Train traffic had been suspended after the discovery of a suspicious bag in the station, evacuated by police orders shortly before 7:00 p.m. The station was reopened around 9:00 p.m.
“A little before 7:00 p.m., a suspect package was reported at Brussels-North station,” the federal police reported. The station was then completely evacuated. The army demining service (SEDEE) came on site and neutralized the package. “After investigation, it seems that it was a case with, among other things, batteries, cables and solar panels,” said the federal police. “
The owner of the bag was arrested during the control of the package.
The SNCB confirmed that all traffic between Brussels-North and Brussels-Midi had been interrupted as a security measure. Some trains have been diverted, notably via Schaerbeek. “The station has been completely accessible since 9:00 p.m.,” said Tom Guillaume, SNCB spokesperson.
The Stib, for its part, reported significant disturbances on several tram lines, including lines 4, 10 and 55, due to the situation at the station. Around 9:00 p.m., it also indicated that the situation gradually normalized on its network.
