We are talking about Aboriginal cases when a person Contracted the disease on the national territory and did not trace in the contaminated zone within 15 days preceding the appearance of symptoms. As a reminder, chikungunya is transmitted from person to person, only through the bite of a mosquito (Tiger mosquito in metropolitan France) infected with the chikungunya virus.
Field actions to stop the spread of the virus
To avoid the propagation of the disease, Altopicus (the entomological follow-up operator of the tiger mosquito in the Landes) will carry out demoustication operations in several places frequented by the person (Dax, Tosse, Saint-Vincent de Tyrosse).
The objective is to eliminate larval lodges and adult mosquitoes that can transmit the virus.
In addition, a door investigation will be carried out by ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Public Health France, in collaboration with the town halls concerned. The objective is to identify people who have presented in the previous weeks or who are currently presenting symptoms evocative of chikungunya (fever greater than 38.5 ° C, joint pain, rash, fatigue, muscle pain) and inform them about the driving to be taken.
Finally, hospitals, liberal doctors, pharmacists and medical analysis laboratories are also mobilizing to take care of, detect and recall prevention measures to people who could present the symptoms of chikungunya.

ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine monitors the tiger mosquito and mobilizes communities to combat its proliferation through the adoption of appropriate measures. Each year, it broadcasts a Communication campaign “No neighborhood for mosquitoes” And provides town halls with a dedicated platform (prevention tools, social mobilization actions, etc.): Tiger mosquito-New Aquitaine environmental health.

Chikungunya: reinforced monitoring in France
Since May 1, the start of reinforced surveillance until July 23, 2025, have been identified in France:
-
12 Aboriginal transmission episodes of Chikungunya and 3 episodes of dengue transmission in France (42 cases in total)
-
833 cases imported from chikungunya,
-
624 cases imported from dengue,
-
2 cases imported from Zika.
A posteriori, discordant results have been found by the National Reference Center (CNR) of arboviroses between the various samples taken from the declared person as a case of Aboriginal chikungunya residing in Gironde. The additional investigations carried out in this person finally invalidated the diagnosis of infection by the chikungunya virus.
ARS and public health France recall the importance of the reporting of cases which allows rapid intervention aimed at limiting indigenous transmission of the disease.
