Professor Andreas Kleinschmidt appointed at the head of the Hug Clinical Neuroscience Department

The Hug Board of Directors appointed Pr Andreas Kleinschmidt as head of the Department of Clinical Neuroscience. This appointment, which will take effect on 1is October 2025, devotes an academic and clinical course of excellence at the service of neurology.

An international course

With a high -level international trajectory, Professor Kleinschmidt built its expertise between Germany, France, England and Switzerland. Student in medicine at the universities of Francfort-sur-le-Main, Paris and Geneva, he trained in neurology in Düsseldorf with specialization in 1996, then Habilitation in 1997.

His scientific journey led him in particular to the Max Planck Institute in Frankfurt for his thesis in neurophysiology, then at the Max Planck Institute in Göttingen and the London Neurology Institute for its post-doctoral research in functional neuro-imagery. In 2005, he became director of research at Inserm in France, thus consolidating his expertise in basic research.

Arrived at the HUG in 2012 as an assistant assistant doctor of the neurology service and ordinary professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva, Pr Kleinschmidt becomes a chief of the neurology department in 2015, a position he has held since.

World -recognized expertise

Internationally renowned specialist in functional neuromage factory, Professor Kleinschmidt devoted almost two decades to the study of neural oscillations and the neuroanatomy of cognitive functions. His most strongly cited work has led to clarifying the role of spontaneous brain activity and proposing a new neurocognitive model of the hierarchy of attentional functions.

Author of a hundred scientific publications and publisher of a reference work in neurology, it was distinguished by several prestigious prizes, notably the Otto Hahn medal from Max Planck (1995), a Bourse du Wellcomome Trust (1998) and the Bernard Katz Readreship (1999).

A commitment to the service of the profession

Beyond its clinical and research activities, Professor Kleinschmidt is actively involved in the structuring of Swiss neurology. Member of the Council of the Swiss Neurology Society since 2018, he chairs his committee for post-graduated training. Since 2020, he has also assumed the presidency of the Swiss Cephale Society, supervising the development of national therapeutic recommendations.

Precision innovation and medicine

More recently, Professor Kleinschmidt turned to personalized therapy by trying to develop artificial intelligence tools to predict migraine crises. This innovative project of “Migraine Forecasting” integrates digital health technologies, in particular via connected watches, for an innovative preventive approach.

At the head of a department of excellence

The HUG clinical neuroscience department brings together diversified, medical and surgical diagnostic and therapeutic activities, many of which are certified in highly specialized medicine. Rich in research projects, the Department maintains close collaborations with the university and research structures of the Lake Geneva region.

Professor Kleinschmidt succeeds this position at Pr Karl Schaller who remains chief doctor of the neurosurgery service. This appointment testifies to the Hug’s desire to maintain their position as leader in neuroscience, combining clinical excellence, technological innovation and advanced training.
