“As the president said, his hope is to interact (with Putin) and to get a very quickly and very early idea of the possibility of peace or not,” Rubio told journalists in the State Department, on the sidelines of a meeting with Paraguay.
“The president spoke to him, I believe, four times on the phone. He believed that it was important to speak to him now in person, look him in the eye and determine what was possible and what was not, “he added.
Asked to find out if territorial concessions will be discussed, the American Secretary of State replied: “It will be necessary to discuss, among other things, territorial disputes, claims and reasons that motivate the fighting. All these elements will be part of a global whole, but I think that the president hopes to obtain a stop of the fighting so that these discussions can take place ”.
He also considered, as Ukraine and Europeans claim, that “to achieve peace, I think we all recognize that we will have to discuss security guarantees”.
“Let’s see how the talks take place. We are hopeful, “he said while stressing that” in the end, it is up to Ukraine and Russia to get along “to achieve peace.
