Safety declaration in Europe and the 50th anniversary of the OSCE

August 1, 2025 – Ottawa (Ontario) – World Affairs Canada

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Anita Anand, made the following declaration today:

“Canada joins the other participating states of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Signing of the final act of Helsinki, the document at the origin of the OSCE which constitutes the foundation of global and cooperative security in Europe and beyond.

“The OSCE played an essential role in the security of the Euro-Atlantic region by establishing an effective architecture of arms control and a system making it possible to advance standards in matters of human rights, fundamental freedoms and democracy. In a world where our common values are increasingly questioned, the OSCE is today more important than ever. Canada reaffirms its commitment to security in Europe and the principles of the cooperative partnership that the OSCE has defended in order to contribute to transatlantic stability in the past 5 decades.

“Canada has been and will continue to be a leader and a reliable partner in the defense of multilateralism and the international order based on rules. Canada reaffirms its commitment to Helsinki’s final act and the fundamental principles that underlie it, sovereignty, territorial integrity and peaceful cooperation. These principles remain even more relevant today in the light of the blatant violations that Russia perpetuates towards them. »»
