Spain: more than 1,100 deaths attributable to the heat wave that has just ended

More than 1,100 deaths can be attributed to the heat wave which has just ended in Spain and which lasted 16 days, according to the estimates carried out via a tool managed by the Carlos III public health research institute.

The exact number of deaths attributable to this heat wave which extended from August 3 to 18 is 1149, according to this baptized system MoMo (Monitoring of mortality), which collects on a daily basis the number of deaths in Spain and calculates the gap of mortality from predictable mortality on the basis of the recorded historical series.

He then joined the external factors that can explain this gap. Among these factors include the temperatures reported by the National Meteorology Agency (AEMET).

The system cannot establish absolute causation between the deaths recorded and the climatic conditions, but the statistics are the best estimate of the number of deaths for which the heat wave could be the decisive factor.

In July already, some 1,060 people had been allocated by MoMo On the heat wave, an increase of more than 50 % compared to July 2024.

Spain continues to fight fires that rage in the northwest and west of the country, where the army has been deployed to help contain the flames.

The heat wave that has just ended in Spain, during which temperatures up to 45 ° C were noted in the south of the country, has also considerably complicated the work of firefighters and soldiers who fight against very large fires, especially in the west of the country.

The drop in temperatures as well as the rains expected in a few regions suggest an improvement in the situation on this front, even if the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, warned Tuesday that he was still staying difficult hours to cross.
