Strawberries are already on tablets. A variety of more spring strawberries is already sold in several farms in the region. The strawberry hitch will also start during the long weekend in Saint-Jean-Baptiste. The producers see a positive eye the coming season. They say that this year, strawberries will mature in time thanks to the hot days and fresh nights.
The climate of the past few weeks has helped this red fruit to grow more slowly. The strawberries, which like to push at temperatures around 24 degrees, have been able to enjoy the heat of the last weeks. Also, the cool nights have prevented them from ripening too quickly. Producers who will open the autocueillette season from June 20 say they are ready to welcome the public.
The hitch
“Strawberries will be a bit late, but the quantity and quality will be there this year. Currently, we sell in our kiosk a variety of autumn. At the start of the hitchhiking, which begins for us on June 20, people will be able to taste a variety of more conventional and hasty strawberries. Later in the season, we will have a variety which is a little sweeter than the others. The taste varies and depends on several factors, but in general, it’s a happy new year. With us, the 1 liter containers will cost $ 5 and those of 3 liters will revolve around $ 12, “says Luc Tremblay, the owner of the Pierre Tremblay farm.
On the side of the Laplante Gardens, which are the old Betsette fresh, the self -cueillette will start around June 24. “This year, strawberries are a good caliber and they are not badly abundant. The price should look like other years. We’ve been a lot of rain for two years, but this year, the plants have managed to stabilize with the sun. Strawberries ripen more slowly because of fresh nights. Two weeks ago, he made 15 degrees during the day. We are almost 10 days late, but it’s good because it gives strawberries the chance to grow and enjoy heat peaks. We invite people to come and visit us to encourage the premises, ”says Pascal Laplante, co -owner of Laplante gardens.
Newsstand
Well known for his sweet corn, the Michel Meunier farm also cultivates strawberries. The first baskets have already been sold in newsstands since June 4. The mid-season strawberry will arrive later towards the end of June. “The season is not so bad. This year’s yield promises to be good. The prices right now are higher, but they may go down later. Right now, we already have very good varieties. Strawberries are not too large, but still sweet. We invite people to come to our kiosk. There will be strawberries available until the end of September, ”explains Jérémie Meunier, co -owner of the Michel Meunier farm.
The Louis Hébert strawberries, a company located in Saint-Valentin, is more than ready for the high season. With its offer of derivative products, the farm announces the official opening of its season the weekend of June 21 and 22.
“The season is fine. The plants have bloomed well and are filled with strawberries. The temperature feeds the plants more quietly. We already have strawberries on our tablets. I am very proud of our evolution as a company. When I resumed the farm, I decided to focus more on processed products by continuing to offer fresh fruit during the summer season. Our products are possible thanks to a transmission of knowledge. We even offer our audience the opportunity to visit the Strawberry Interpretation Center, ”says Geneviève Hébert, owner of the Louis Hébert strawberries.
