Stupor: giant Swiss flag torn apart by the wind at the foot of the säntis

Deployed every August 1 on the north face of the Säntis for the national holiday, a giant Swiss flag torn apart during its course on a grassy slope at the foot of the mountain. This site had been chosen this year due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Torn by a gust of wind on its left side, the giant flag is being repaired.

Many volunteers participated, Thursday morning, in the flag of 80 meters by 80 meters and a weight of 700 kg in a meadow in Schwägalp (AR). The managers of the Säntis cable car had given up deploying it this year on the north face of the mountain due to weather forecasts.

Barely unrolled, the flag was torn apart by a gust, noted a journalist from Keystone-ATS on site. The officials then tried to mend the vertical crack which almost torn out part of the flag.

The first deployment of the giant flag at the Säntis dates back to July 31, 2009. This action has been renewed so far when the weather allowed. The flag has already been torn in places in the past due to the strong wind.
