Access to the Big Dixence dam (VS) remains closed following a large landslide that occurred on July 12. An observation phase is still underway in order to follow the geological evolution of the sector and a reopening is hoped for mid-August.
“Partners are working to set up an automatic monitoring system with regulatory lights that would reopen the road in a controlled manner,” said the municipality of heremence on Tuesday in its last point of the situation. It specifies that the risk for the safety of the dam is “not significant.”
While waiting for the situation to normalize, all circulation towards the Grande Dixence, including cyclists and pedestrians, is prohibited, resulting in the closure of the site and its tourist facilities. Access via the Meribé’s pedestrian path is also closed.
Security remains priority
The objective is a reopening of access to the site by mid-August, “subject to geological evolution in the field”, continues the press release. “Priority remains the security of the population, visitors and site workers.”
Saturday July 12, around 5000 m3 of rocks detached from a cliff overlooking the site. Four days later, the municipality of Hérémence announced the complete closure of access to the dam.
