It was once again a frenzied football party in the federal city, but the Happy End did not take place: the Swiss national women’s team lost its Euro quarter -final in the Wankdorf against Spain and farewell to the tournament at home.
To beat the Spanish world champions, the Swiss would need a new “Bern miracle”, which fans tried to invoke from the trip to the stadium, but the gods of football did not give thanks.
For the city of Bern, this quarter -final will still enter history. Officially, 25,000 people took the way to the Wankdorf at the beginning of the evening, which makes it the biggest step of supporters in the history of a female euro.
This new record was produced mainly by Swiss supporters, to which were added a few hundred supporters of the Spanish team.
A peaceful atmosphere
The crowd served from the city center to the teddy’s pit, then went up the AargaUStalden to the stadium. Under a blue sky and by temperatures slightly less than 30 degrees, the atmosphere was peaceful and joyful, as reported by a journalist from the Keystone-ATS news agency.
The female euros have existed since 1984. The previous record had been established almost two weeks ago, also in Bern, when 14,000 people had participated in the march of supporters before Switzerland-Island.
The match at the Wankdorf was played on closed windows with 29,734 supporters. The crowds were also great to the public viewing on the federal place. An hour before kick -off, the fan zone was no longer freely accessible: those who wanted to enter it had to wait for someone else to leave it.
Eyes riveted on the match
People also crowded in front of many other screens in the city center. Even in Gurtenfestival, the match was in all minds. Among the festival outfits on the Bernese mountain, you could see some red jerseys.
The broadcast of the match completed the musical program. “We want to be in tune with the times. The female euro is on everyone’s lips. Not to broadcast this historic quarter-final would therefore simply ignore,” Gurtenfestival spokesperson Nadine Brönnimann told the Keystone-Ats press agency.
Just in time to kick off, the adjoining slope of the tent scene was occupied by countless festival -goers who wanted to follow the match. Some were seated at such a distance from the screen that the ball was barely visible to the image. However, this did not hang an atmosphere of fire in any way.
A long night
The defeat of the Swiss team cooled the atmosphere in Bern at the end of the evening, but the party was not over.
On the one hand, the supporters celebrated their team which fought with self -denial: “a performance of which we can be proud,” also declared the federal adviser Martin Pfister on the social network X. “I warmly congratulate and delight the support which women benefit,” wrote the Minister of Sports.
On the other hand, the city had already decreed a free night – regardless of the result of the quarter -final. She wanted to pay tribute to the performance of the Swiss. At the end of the meeting, nothing was thus opposed to a long night in Bern.
