The beaches of the avengeon and the pregny-chambésy beach (GE) are temporarily closed to the public. This measure is due to the discharge of large quantities of wastewater in the avengeon watercourse, indicate the departments of the territory and health and mobility on Friday.
(Keystone-ATS) Two failing collectors are at the origin of the incident. “We found concrete in a collector who generated a plug,” said Guillaume Marsac, deputy director general of the Cantonal Water Office. This concrete may come from a site. An investigation was opened to try to establish the facts.
The cap caused an overflow of wastewater. These then poured into the rainwater collector and then finished in the avengeron, noted Mr. Marsac. Geneva industrial services quickly intervened to clean the pipes and contain the spill.
Health monitoring of water quality will be provided in the coming days by the Cantonal Water Office. When the situation has returned to normal, the prohibition can be lifted. “This will be the case at the start of next week, at best,” said Marsac.
Ingestion or contact with worn water includes health risks, recall the Geneva authorities. Fécale bacteria can cause gastroenteritis and skin infections. Symptoms often disappear after a few days. The incident has no consequence on other water uses.
