The former archbishop of Paris André Vingt-Trois died at the age of 82

André Vingt-Trois died this Friday at the age of 82, according to the current Archbishop of Paris.

Cardinal André Vingt-Trois, who was Archbishop of Paris between 2005 and 2017, died this Friday, July 18 at the age of 82, announced the current archbishop of Paris Laurent Ulrich.

“Today, at the beginning of the afternoon, Cardinal André Vingt-Trois returned to God,” said Mgr Laurent Ulrich in a statement, announcing the death of the man who was also president of the Conference of Bishops of France.

A mass in Notre-Dame for him

“He was much more than our archbishop, but a pastor, a father, an example; for me, a brother in the episcopal ministry and the service, and a friend,” recalls Mgr Laurent Ulrich.

The diocese of Paris salutes “its pastoral commitment” and “its attention to the life of the church”.

“Cardinal Vingt-Trois has taken part in the great debates that have gone through the Church and society in recent decades.”, Note the Catholic Church on its social networks.

Born November 7, 1942 in Paris in a Catholic but not practicing family, ordered priest in 1969, André Vingt-Trois was appointed Archbishop of Tours in 1999.

In 2005, he succeeded Jean-Marie Lustiger as Archbishop of Paris, and was created Cardinal in 2007 by Pope Benoît XVI. The same year, he became president of the Conference of Bishops of France (CEF), for two mandates where he will not hesitate to descend into the arena on social subjects.

Bishop Ulrich asked “at 5 pm today (Friday), the Bourdon of our Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral and the bells of all the parish churches of our diocese sound in the death kick for each of its 82 years”.

The 6 pm mass in Notre-Dame will be celebrated for him, and others will be in the Parisian churches on Saturday and the following days, the archbishop also announced. A condolence book will also be open to the Paris diocese website.
