The Honor Magic V5, a new foldable “the thinest in the world”, shows the limits of the race for thinness

Undoubtedly upset to having been sting the title of “the finest foldable mobile in the world” by Oppo, Honor returned to the attack with his Magic V5 presented in China yesterday. But progress is less spectacular than expected.

8.8 mm, the equivalent of 4 pieces of two euros piled up on top of each other. By presenting his Honor V5 Magic in China on July 2, 2025, Honor wanted to hit hard by presenting an even more slender foldable mobile than the now famous Oppo Find N5.

But the mobile of the Chinese manufacturer is in fact only very slightly finer than competition for obvious reasons of physical and technical limits, notes Notebookcheck.

A very relative finesse

As Oppo predicted, the race for slimming on foldable smartphones touches its limits. Honor’s new phone is only a half-millimeter thinner than its competitor, a difference almost invisible to the naked eye. And this record also comes with a few significant asterisks.

The 8.8 mm are only reached in the white version of the mobile, the finishes of the other models adding a tiny thickness to the whole. It should also be noted that the important photo island (which is almost as large as the phone in itself) actually adds a considerable thickness on the phone, somewhat tarnishing the technical prowess on which the phone is sold.

The desire to create increasingly fine smartphones will also come up against a major problem: the USB-C port. On the Oppo Find N5 already, the connection seemed to be cramped. With a half-millimeter less, it is a safe bet that we touch the physical limits of what it is possible to do while integrating such a socket on a phone.

Price and availability

Once these details have been given, we can still greet the technical feat that Honor managed to make since the Magic V5 has a completely honorable technical sheet. There is a 6.4 inch outdoor screen, an interior display of 7.95 inch (both OLED and 120 Hz). 12 or 16 GB of RAM accompany the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and a 5820 mAh battery feeds everything (6100 mAh for the Chinese model).

On the photo side, there is a main 50 Mpx sensor (optically stabilized), an ultra-angle with always 50 MP pixel and a 3x zoom of 64 Mpx. In front, it is 20 Mpx which will take care of capturing the selfies.

To go further
Are we going to attend a new race for finesse on smartphones?

For now, The prices and availability of Magic V5 in Europe are unknown. In raw conversion, the Chinese prices displayed by Honor range from € 1,000 to € 1300, but probably that we will have to add a good dose of tax on it.
