An asylum seeker was sentenced in absentia to six months in prison in Graubünden for having attacked a Jew in Davos (GR) in summer 2024. The man did not show up at his trial on Thursday before the Prättigau/Davos regional court.
The 24 -year -old Algerian appeal is therefore considered to be withdrawn and he was found guilty of discrimination based on race, ethnicity or religion, in accordance with the criminal order of the public prosecutor. The man had repeatedly struck a 19 -year -old Jewish tourist on the Promenade de Davos, on the night of August 22 to 23, 2024.
In addition to the prison sentence, the convicted person will have to pay 765 francs in court costs and 3000 francs for his law enforcement. The decision is not yet final and can be challenged within ten days to the Supreme Court of Graubünden.
Expelled to Belgium
The Algerian had been expelled to Belgium a month after the incident. His place of stay is currently not clear, said the vice-president of the court.
Given the short duration of the sentence, the man will not have to serve his sentence where he is currently and will not be extradited, told Keystone-Ats Mathias Fässler, director of the Executive Execution Office. On the other hand, as soon as the condemned one sets his feet in Switzerland and the police find him, he will be transferred to Graubünden to serve his sentence.
The same procedure also applies to the second asylum applicant who spat on the same Jewish tourist, shouting several times ‘Free Palestine’. He is always wanted.
