The new Pixar has just released: the studio makes a historic decision for the next film

The latest film at the Pixar studio was released in theaters. It is a 3D cartoon like all those who preceded it. But for his next film, Pixar decided for the first time in the history of the studio to return to a production … in 2D.

The latest film from Pixar studios was released in theaters. It is a 3D cartoon like all those who have preceded it in recent years. This new cartoon tells the story of Elio, an 11 -year -old boy on a trip through the galaxy, all in synthetic images.

Barely released, the studios are already bent over: their next film will be called “Gatto” (cat, in Italian) and will follow the journeys of a black cat in the streets of Venice. Only one image was revealed and created the surprise among the studio fans. For the first time in its story, this cartoon will not be in 3D, but in 2D. Indeed, Pixar announced that he wanted to return to “old -fashioned” productions, in two dimensions.

These are images that have really been thought out.

This amazing choice is justified by a desire for a return to authenticity and simplicity, in the era of artificial intelligence. According to Jérémy Depuydt, director and director of the Pixileon studio, “these are images that have really been reflected, composed in terms of colors to amaze, to arouse emotion. »»

More generally, we are witnessing a return of 2D and the traditional cartoon in several cinematographic works, for example Amélie and the metaphysics of the tubes, a 2D film inspired by a novel by Amélie Nothomb, or the Asterix and Obelix series recently produced by Alain Chabat.

“It is not a step back”

“It is not a step back,” argues Jérémy Depuydt, “since we always use technological tools. We work with graphic tablets, but we work by hand with our stylics on screens. And it allows us to really draw by hand and to reveal know-how ”.

The realization of a 2D cartoon requires almost the same production time as a 3D cartoon, that is to say around 4-5 years. It is therefore not a concern for saving time. In reality, it may well be that this return to drawing allows the Pixar studio to receive a wider audience, and in particular an older audience, nostalgic for 2D masterpieces of his childhood.
