The port of Wood Islands, to Prince Edward Island, where the Northumberland Ferries Limited travelers are in particular, will be dragged in August. The measure, which aims to eliminate the accumulation of sediment at the bottom of the water, delights local elected officials, but annoys the fishermen.
It is because of the accumulation of sediment, combined with tides deemed abnormally low, that Northumberland Ferries Limited had to cancel several crossings and limit the weight of vehicles on others.
This situation does not happen as a surprise in the province. Darlene Comptonthe Minister of Economic Development, already showed this situation last April. The one who is also the deputy for the district where the port is demanding the dredging of the premises.
We have to flirt with the place where the traveler is working. I know that fishermen are concerned about this question. Drawing is an important aspect to have an operational and reliable crossing service.

Transport Canada, the federal organization responsible for the ferry service, estimated during its annual evaluation that there is a greater accumulation of sediment in the port.
The dredging of the premises, scheduled for 2027 and carried out normally every five years, is ahead of two years, and will thus take place next August. By way of press release, the federal ministry explains that Drawing is necessary periodically to ensure that ships can sail safely in ports and channel.
The new liberal federal deputy for the Cardigan district, Kent MacDonald Add that it is global warming that is to be shown in this acceleration of the natural process.
Climate change accentuates the accumulations of sediment more frequently than in the past, because ice is becoming increasingly rare.

Furious fishermen against Ottawa
Planning a dredging in the middle of the summer is not just happy. Fishermen of Wood Islands went back against the Transport Canada decision. Neither the method nor the calendar suits them.
If the dredging takes place, we want the sediments to be deposited on the island and not elsewhere in the water. As for August, we are very worried.
The association of fishermen of the Prince Edward Island learned last April that Transport Canada will impose dredging in August as well as the spill of the sediments recovered in the port, further in the strait of Northumberland.
And according to fishermen, such a decision could have a short and long -term impact on the lobster fishing industry.
The sediments will be transported and poured further in the Strait, in places where lobsters and other marine species are established. The impact could be devastating
advance Ian MacPherson.
The president of the association of fishermen of the Prince Edward Island does not believe that Transport Canada will return to his decision to favor a spill on firm land rather than in the Strait.
He nevertheless hopes that the organization will postpone dredging in the fall after the lobster fishing season in the region which spreads from August to October.

Passengers must adapt
The situation has consequences on crossings between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island which are disturbed from June 24 to 28.
Passengers had to adapt to this unique situation. Colin Murneya tourist from Quebec, from Halifax has never heard of such a phenomenon. He and his girlfriend on vacation were surprised by this announcement.
I have never heard of a ferry cancellation because of the tide. I didn’t even know it could happen
he claims.

Beyond the surprise, some worried travelers had to learn beforehand to avoid all the inconvenience.
I asked if the ferry works. Northumberland Ferries explained to me that only the afternoon crossings were canceled. Those in the morning operate in normal
