The Prime Ministers of Canada meet Mark Carney

The prime ministers provincial and territorial want to know more about Mr. Carney’s plans to respond to the ultimatum of the American president, Donald Trump, who set the deadline on August 1 to conclude a trade agreement.

In a letter addressed to Mr. Carney on July 10, Trump threatened to impose customs duties of 35 % on Canadian products on August 1, thus setting a new deadline for commercial negotiations which should have been completed today.

Last week, Carney hinted that a trade agreement with the United States would likely include certain customs duties. He said he expects an intensification of negotiations as August 1 approaches.

During the first day of the Federation of the Federation on Monday, the Prime Minister of Quebec, François Legault, said that he still wants the federal government to get along with Donald Trump in order to give predictability to the country’s economy, even if certain customs duties remain in place.

Mr. Legault, however, hammered that Ottawa should not compromise on “neuralgic sectors” for Quebec, such as supply, culture and language.

The Prime Ministers of the provinces and territories also hope to learn more about the major infrastructure projects envisaged by the government of Mr. Carney.

The Federation’s Council is held in Huntsville, in the Muskoka, Ontario region, until Wednesday.
