The rain caused several landslides on Sunday evening in Brienz (GR), a Grison Village already evacuated since November. Nearly ten thousand cubic meters of rock fell on the equipment which already threatens to fall above the village. The risk of significant destruction is now flat, because the amassed material now moves twice as fast.

If the 1.2 million cubic meters began to slide definitively, they could, due to the wet subsoil, advance further than in dry weather, announced on Monday the town of Albula. The whole village of Brienz could therefore be buried.

In itself, such landslides are not exceptional in the region. But this time, the speed of the material likely to fall doubled in a very short time, to reach 46 centimeters per day.

Prohibition for bikes and pedestrians

Experts recommended that the authorities prepare for the next “blue” phase, adds the town. This phase includes the closure of all the surrounding communication channels. The village has already been evacuated since last November.

The cantonal office of bridges and roads and rhetist railways (RHB) therefore put into service Monday morning signaling lights on the roads and the railway line below the village. If the material stands out, the roads of Tiefencastel in Surava and Lenzerheide, as well as the line of the Rhb albula will be immediately closed.

In addition, a ban for bikes and pedestrians is in preparation for the two sections of the road concerned, writes the town.

Permanently evaluated situation

Experts constantly observe the situation and work in close collaboration with the authorities, assured the municipality. Preparation for the “blue” phase is purely preventive in nature.

Currently, specialists, however, expect the risk to be quickly defused. In this case, the “blue” phase should not be declared. (JZS/ATS)
