McDonald’s Japon
An exclusive Pikachu card was available in card packages sold with a Happy Meal menu.
Unusual – a collaboration that runs short. As part of a commercial operation in Japan offered by McDonald’s and the Pokémon license, the Japanese could find in their Happy Meal menu Pokémon card packages, including one of the famous Pikachu. But everything turned to fiasco, the organizers who have largely underestimated the power of such a collaboration.
The operation which was to last 3 days (from August 9 to 11) was finally stopped after only 24 hours. Indeed, according to an article published on the Pokebeach site (specializing in Pokémon news), the operation quickly became out of control in restaurants. Interminable expectations and limited stocks caused the start of the rush requiring the police intervention.
It has also proven that fans who wanted the gift included in the menu were completely disinterested in food … causing significant food waste. Many menus were found intact abandoned in restaurants and in Japanese streets, as evidenced by photos published on social networks.
Cards sold on the internet
The cards also found themselves on the internet. Some packages were sold more than 2000 yen the package (14 euros) while a simple Happy Meal menu was only 500 yen (around 3 euros), reports Nintendosoup. It is therefore via a press release that the Japanese subsidiary of McDo announced the early judgment of the collaboration by evoking only “Sales far superior to those expected”.
“We sincerely apologize for not having been able to meet the expectations of our customers who were impatiently waiting for this product because of the early end of the distribution. Please do not contact stores to ask them for their stock availability ”, Add the company.
This is not the first time that a collaboration has degenerated. Last May, it was a partnership with the cartoon Chiikawa that caused a mess.
