One of the main defects of mobile devices of all kinds concerns storage. The SSD discs are fast but bulky, and often welded to motherboards. Conversely, the memory cards are small and removable, but slow. The Chinese manufacturer Biwin has just unveiled a new storage medium that combines the advantages of the two types of memory: the mini SSD.
It is barely larger than a microSD card (15 x 17 mm against 11 x 15 mm), and nevertheless rivals speed with an SSD NVME disc. The manufacturer announces maximum sequential reading speeds of 3,700 Mb/s and 3,400 Mb/s in writing. The mini SSD will be available in three sizes: 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB.

The Mini SSD goes through the PCI Express bus (PCIE) with the NVME protocol. In addition to being much smaller than an SD card, it uses the PCIE Gen4x2 with NVME 1.4 much more efficient, as well as a 3D NAND 3D memory. Like a SIM card, it is placed in a drawer, and can be removed by inserting an ejection tool.
However, it should be noted that it is not (yet) a standard format. For the mini SSD to be a success, other manufacturers will have to adopt it. But Biwin already has its first customers, since two new gaming aircraft joined the mini SSD have already been announced. This is the GPD Win 5, an overpowered mobile game console, which requires being plugged into the mains, as well as the Super X onxplayer, a hybrid game tablet.
Can the mini SSD impose itself in the face of competition?
In addition, the Mini SSD will have to face the MicroSD Express cards, a new format with a maximum reading speed of 985 MB/s. In addition to being backwards with the microSD, it was adopted by the Nintendo Switch 2, which will give it sales arguments despite a lower speed. There are also SD Express cards, slightly faster than the mini SSD, but much larger.
Biwin markets its new storage support for game consoles, smartphones, tablets, laptops and even cameras. One of the determining factors for its adoption therefore risks being the price. However, the manufacturer has not yet announced price or availability date.
