- Instant coffee consumption could increase the risk of developing a dry DMLA, according to a new study.
- On the other hand, there is no link between the ground and decaffeinated coffee and the DMLA.
- According to researchers, instant coffee contains harmful chemical compounds that can trigger oxidative stress and inflammation in the retina.
Bad news for the addicts of very pressed caffeine: instant coffee could damage your eyes. According to a new study published in the journal Food Science & Nutritiondrinking it would significantly increase the risk of developing age -related macular degeneration (AMD). And more precisely that of the dry type.
Indeed, as health insurance recallsthere are two forms : exudative (or “humid”) and atrophic (or “dry”). The first corresponds to an abnormal development of blood vessels in the macula while the second is characterized by an abnormal slim of the macula and a progressive disappearance of the specialized cells equipped with photoreceptors.
Instant coffee increases the risk of DMLA
During their work, the researchers wanted to understand the impact of coffee on the vision and development of the dry DMLA. For this, they studied data of more than 500,000 people, collected as part of the UK Biobank cohort. The consumption of three types of coffee has been analyzed: ground, instantaneous and decaffeinated.
Thanks to a statistical technique, the team discovered that instant coffee was linked to a higher risk of developing a dry DMLA, but not the ground or decaffeinated. “”The results suggest a genetic causal link between the consumption of instant coffee and an increased risk of dry macular degeneration“Said Dr qi Jia. In other words, depending on your genetics, drinking instant coffee every day could impact your vision.
DMLA dryers: the instant coffee transformation method in question?
But why does instant coffee increase the risk of DMLA? According to scientists, instant coffee transformation methods release harmful chemical compounds such as acrylamide or oxidized lipids. These could trigger oxidative stress and inflammation in the retina.
It is the latter, the inflammation of the retina, which damages the photoreceptors responsible for the central vision, affected in the dry DMLA. “”These compounds could be trigger agents in the development of the dry form of the DMLA“, Detail the authors.
If you have a genetic predisposition to DMLA, that is to say that there have been cases in your family, it could be good to avoid instant coffee. Replace it with the ground or a filter, which are not associated with this disease.
