50 km from the goal, they were therefore only 8 at the front: Remco Evenepoel (Sudal), Victor Campenaerts (Visma), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin), Tim Wellens et Florian Vermeersch (UAE), Dries De Bondt (Decathlon), Everyday life et Jenno Berckmoes (Lotto).
Between two attacks by Evenepoel, Wellens took advantage of a slight lull to take a leap, camp eating and Lyvins in his wheel … to drop them a few kilometers later and play his all-round 42 kilometers from the finish.
Marked to the panties by his opponents, Evenepoel had to let go first before attacking again 35 kilometers from the goal. The only runner to be able to follow him, Jasper Philipsen left all the work to his friend Evenepoel. Result of the games: a red carpet unrolled for Wellens, front resistant to pocket this superb victory.
Behind him, Evenepoel ended up winning Philipsen in the last kilometer to finish 2nd in front of the runner Alpecin. Arjen Living and Florian Vermeersch complete the Top 5.
Wellens’ last podium on the online race of the Belgian Championships dates back to 2016, a 2nd place behind Philippe Gilbert.
