The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said that his government was “no luck with Canada” during the current trade negotiations.
Ottawa and Washington conduct talks in order to conclude a trade agreement before the deadline set at next week by the American president, on August 1 more specifically.
Trump argued that his government did not focus on Friday morning on an agreement with Canada. He added that Canada could become a country “where we are content to pay customs duties”.
Trump sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney threatening to impose customs tariffs of 35 % on Canadian products imported into the United States if a trade agreement is not concluded by August 1. The White House later said that these customs duties would only apply to products that do not comply with the trade agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico (ACEUM).
Canada is already affected by the customs duties imposed by Mr. Trump on steel, aluminum and cars, and will be affected by copper rights that will be added next month.
Canadian Minister responsible for Commerce Canada-United States, Dominic Leblanc, said he was encouraged Thursday after a meeting with the US trade secretary Howard Lunick, and Republican senators in Washington.
